Cullen Performance Hall

Description

Cullen Performance Hall is a prestigious performance hall located on the campus of the University of Houston in Houston, Texas. The 1,544-seat hall is a major cultural venue that hosts music, opera, dance, and theater performances, as well as public lectures. Designed by architect Alfred C. Finn and opened in 1950, the facility was named for Ezekiel W. Cullen, a congressman from the Republic of Texas and the grandfather of the project's primary donor, Hugh Roy Cullen.

Occupying the eastern half of the E. Cullen Building, Cullen Performance Hall was part of a major campus expansion begun in 1948. The hall originally seated 1,680 people and served as a counterpart to the Houston Music Hall, the city's premier music venue at the time. In 1988, the hall was completely renovated, which allowed it to maintain its status as one of the leading cultural centers of Houston.
