Lisner Auditorium

Description

Lisner Auditorium is a landmark performance venue located on the Foggy Bottom campus of George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Named for Abram Lisner, a university trustee and benefactor, it was designed in 1940 and completed in 1946. Its late Art Deco and classical classicism architectural style makes the auditorium an outstanding example of architectural excellence.

For decades, Lisner Auditorium has hosted major classical, folk, rock, blues, opera, and theater performances. In 1990, the auditorium was listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its significance as an architectural work and performance venue. The auditorium played a key role in the desegregation of George Washington University and Washington, D.C., serving as a catalyst for students calling for the university to admit African-American students.

The auditorium seats 1,350 and is home to the Washington Concert Opera. Purchase tickets for upcoming events on our website, where you can also find a schedule and poster of upcoming events.
